Safety Tips for Observing Coming Total Eclipse on April 8th, 2024
The total eclipse on Monday April 8, 2024 will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. The partial eclipse begins in Dallas, Texas at 12:23 pm CDT, the totality in Dallas begins at 1:40 CDT with the maximum totality at 1:42 CDT. Totality in Dallas ends at 1:44 pm CDT and the partial at 3:02 CDT. For Caribou, Maine, the partial begins at 2:22 pm EDT, the totality at 3:32 EDT. During an eclipse, it is never safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing. When watching an annular solar eclipse directly with your eyes you must look through safe solar viewing glasses (“eclipse glasses”) or a safe handheld solar viewer at all times. Safe solar viewers are thousands of times darker and must comply with the ISO 12312-2 international standard.
